Ummm… first of all, spending money to increase the number of Black students at UCSD is hardly a waste of money; we accept far more Black students to the school than actually choose to attend; since something’s clearly working to keep them out (perhaps the toxic racist environment that allows something like the Compton Cookout to occur, and then for students to say it’s “not a big deal” or to defend it as a patriotic exercise in free speech), then it’s the administration’s duty to correct the problem by actively recruiting them. Secondly, the university isn’t spending any money on trying to make itself Black; that’s the problem.

I fucking mixed water in with my milk so that we could make it last longer because we were so damn poor. I was tormented most all year by students and their parents who called me names, spat on me, and would flat out beat me up. I went to school for 6 years of elementary before we finally moved. And I still made it here. Don’t just assume we all have awesome opportunities. Have YOU ever seen your house broken into with derogatory messages written in your bedroom? YOU misconstrue what is being said. This is not a subject of “greed to succeed” but the University putting the rights above others simply because they are of a minority class. BSU is requesting a “safe area.” Do you know that calls for SEGREGATION of their own doing AND funding. OUR FUNDING – from all students to go to something as ridiculous a request as this. Also: HOW THE HELL are we all going through discrimination and oppression because of this party? Should others not uphold this “model minority”? The event itself is none of anyone’s business unless in attendance. You are the perfect prime example of how our kind is blinded by the greed to succeed to actually realize the discrimination and oppression that we all go through. Who the hell are you?? You assume that we live in this sort of post racial world because we upheld the model minority and that others should do the same. You assume this whole white privilege that you have and you are blinded by that. Have you forgotten or have you not even acknowledged your history? The fee increase affects us all. It affects the climate of our campus, the people we work alongside with. They are suffering the fee increases and racism. That is farrr beyond your complaint of the fee increases. The university should care about “black kids with hurt feelings”. You should care.

This is getting blown way out of proportion and the BSU is demanding wayyy too much special treatment. We’re trying to build a sense of community, not separate out all the African-American students from the rest of UCSD by giving them different treatment. Also, African-Americans aren’t the only ones that get discriminated against at UCSD. There’s a lot of hostility toward Asians as well.

These efforts speak volumes in our communities and in our generation. When faced with problems and hardship do not single your brother or sister out. Your brother or sister isnt defined by skin color…rather by interest. The human interest.

sorry, but by creating special demands, you are further creating a racist environment at ucsd and discontent on campus. the huge amount of asians on campus don’t and haven’t ever made special demands, so why is it “perfectly acceptable” for the bsu to make such demands? plus, i feel like people have way more stereotypes against asians than they do with the underrepresented minorities..have you heard an asian discuss their problems with social inequality lately?
everyone keeps saying how this situation is not solely about the bsu or the underrepresented minority but it just seems like they’re trying to make a list of demands for shit that is entirely out of our control. how are YOU yourself going to convince the UC regents to provide more funding? it’s not a decision we as students vote on, so fucking live with it.

btw, i got to UCSD without sat/act prep classes, going to public school. I was in a richer neighborhood, and so may have had better teachers, but there was no direct money spent toward my getting in to UCSD other than paying test fees. -

once again, a joke gets blown way out of proportion.
i’m not saying that the compton cookout wasn’t an extremely offensive event. it was. but the problem is not that those students wanted to launch an attack on black students at ucsd and black culture. if they had legitimately felt prejudice towards blacks they probably wouldn’t have been so open about the whole thing. that shit definitely wouldn’t have made it to facebook.
the real problem is that these students thought that they were planning an innocent party with a funny theme and that that theme is actually incredibly offensive to many blacks. it wasn’t intentional, they just didn’t get it. and how could they? i’m not black and i honestly don’t understand how a black student could feel victimized at ucsd. ucsd is the tamest environment i’ve ever lived in, and i don’t mean that in a good way. maybe if AS wasn’t so worried about liability they would get their shit together and allow the media orgs to get back to work and give the students of ucsd a voice right now instead of taking it away.
also just a brief note for people contributing to this thread. read your fucking messages before you post them. mistakes in grammar and spelling make you sound like an idiot on the internet. and nobody listens to an idiot. (i realize i haven’t bothered to capitalize any letters in this post, and that makes me a little bit of a hypocrite…. BUUUUUUT, i don’t care)

Let’s get a few things straight:
First, UCSD is an academic institution established for research. Its primary purpose is to foster an environment of education, research, and development of knowledge. Its purpose is not here to cater to our feelings, but rather provide education.
Second, to anyone who shouts “REAL PAIN”, you will fall under two categories:
1) Sincere.
2) Insincere.If you’re sincere about your pain, I will be praying for your comfort because this is only the beginning. As successful as you are to be studying at UCSD, the world is going to offer you a multitude of challenges way beyond the scope of a silly fraternity-hosted drunken debacle that may have indirectly (direct is a directed hate crime) affected your comfort. My advice (to atheists) is to toughen up or (to theists) pray for strength. Sometimes, life gets hard and we’re going to need each other.
If you’re insincere about your pain, then you are simply all the bad things that people are talking about “reverse racism” et cetera. But the universe has a tendency to deal with your kinds of people accordingly. The world will spit you out.
Third, as loosely affiliated members of UCSD, we would all like to make this academic environment a more comfortable place, but that’s not our founding purpose. Therefore, racial comfort (like each of our given positions in UCSD) is a privilege and not a right.
